How To Combat Skin Redness

What's causing red skin and how to get rid of it - by InStyle Team
  • 27 Jul 2020
How To Combat Skin Redness

Suffering from a red, flushed complexion is a common skin concern, particularly for those with fair or sensitive skin.

While there are myriad factors that can lead to skin redness, skin conditions such as rosacea or eczema call for a unique set of skincare rules.

Below, we round up three reasons for skin redness and explore the best solution for each.

Sensitive Skin

Those with sensitive skin will well and truly know the struggle of having to deal with redness. When skin is reactive, certain ingredients can compromise the skin's barrier and cause the skin to flare-up. If you suffer from reactions to skincare products, or regularly experience inflammation, irritation or redness, you could have sensitive skin.

Look to hydrating skincare products with soothing ingredients that are suitable for sensitive skin. Perfect for helping to calm irritated skin, Minenssey's Hydrating Dynamic Facial Essence reboots and plumps skin. The nutrient-spiked water comes enriched with Australian native hydrating superpowers, such as moisture-retaining Flannel Flower, and antioxidant-rich Jojoba Leaf, Dessert Lime and Bilberry. It also has probiotic ACB Yoghurt Dermal Respiratory Factor to aid in collagen production and skin-cell reproduction, and hyaluronic acid for added hydration.

Redness From Rosacea

A chronic inflammatory condition arising from external factors, rosacea can be triggered by anything from UV exposure to medications, exercise and hormones. More severe than regular sensitive skin, rosacea symptoms include irritated, bumpy skin and excessive flushing. Over time, it can result in broken blood vessels.

While not all causes of rosacea are avoidable, it can be beneficial to learn which lifestyle factors can trigger flare-ups so that you can avoid them. Some people who suffer from rosacea benefit from cutting out coffee, red wine and diary. Each individual is different so it's always best to check in with your dermatologist who can recommend the best solution for your skin.

Avoid using rich cleansers and moisturisers, as these products are often loaded up with fragrances and sulphates. Many people mistake irritated skin for dry skin, however those with rosacea would benefit most from gentle skincare products rich in antioxidants. To avoid reactions, steer clear of retinol and AHAs.

Eczema-Related Redness

With symptoms similar to that of an allergic skin reaction, eczema can be difficult to diagnose: both conditions result in inflamed pink dry patches that cause itching or a burning sensation. If you think you're suffer from eczema, book an appointment with a dermatologist who will be able to diagnose your condition and might prescribe you with an anti-inflammatory cream.

In all cases, keep your skincare regimen simple and adopt hypoallergenic skincare brands. Weather and other environmental factors can wreak havoc with eczema-prone skin so, again, it pays to be aware of these triggers.
