Pretty sheer
Save a high-maintenance bold pout for special events; summer make-up should look and feel effortless. Lending a romantic, just-kissed finish, lip stains and tinted balms bring a flush of colour to a bare complexion. Recreate model and Myer youth ambassador Sarsha Chisholm’s look with an ultra- hydrating formula such as Dior’s Lip Glow in Pink ($52; at myer.com.au). For greater impact, apply a balm to boost moisture and volume, then use your finger to press the pigment of your favourite lipstick over the top.
Easy moves
“Social media may make it seem like people are training two times a day, seven days a week, but that isn’t necessary to be a healthy, active human being,” says Ashley Joi, expert trainer on Chris Hemsworth’s health and fitness app, centr.com. Rather, she suggests seeking out activities you enjoy; that way you’re more likely to get out there and complete a workout.
“Did you dance or swim back in the day? If so, boogie or dive back in. When your body starts to move like it used to, it will respond with that same sense of self and happiness.” Stuck in an office all week? Stepping away from your desk every 30 minutes for three minutes of activity will pay off, says Joi. “Walk a flight of stairs or do some squats. After an eight-hour day, you will have put in an impressive 48 minutes of movement.”
Electric avenue
A thin bolt of blue eyeliner across the lids is an easy way to add a summery spin to your look. To avoid shade shifting, first smear on an eyelid primer, such as Clinique’s All About Shadow Primer for Eyes ($37; at myer.com.au). Taking a fine-tipped pencil, we love Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil in Iridescent Blue with Green Sparkles ($35; at sephora.com.au), begin at the corner of the eye and trace just above your top lash line. For a subtle daytime look, keep the feline flicks short and the rest of your complexion pared back.
Glow on
The golden rule of luminous summer limbs is to apply the same dedication to your body as you do your face. Thankfully, new high-tech formulas are making it easy to be diligent, with body care delivering multiple benefits to fast-track your way to a radiant result. Dermalogica’s Thermafoliant Body Scrub ($67; dermalogica.com.au) sloughs away dead cells, kick-starts the skin’s natural renewal cycle and imparts nourishing antioxidants. In one application, your skin is primed for a boost of bronze via a moisturising, tinted body oil, such as Endota’s Jojoba & Coconut Dry Shimmer Oil ($50; endotaspa.com.au).
Coming clean
Do you find you’re more prone to break-outs in summer? “Heat and humidity can increase the production of sweat and sebum, resulting in a build-up on the skin’s surface that can block pores and provide food to feed acne,” says dermatologist Dr Davin Lim. While you may feel the desire to ramp up your cleansing cycle, Lim says this will only result in stripping the skin and encouraging the sebaceous glands to produce even more oil to combat dryness. Keep to your regular regimen of cleansing twice a day and swap your day moisturiser for a lighter formula, which will keep excess oil at bay.
Making waves
When it comes to brittle ends, your hot hair tools aren’t the only culprits. “UV rays from the sun cause damage to the proteins within the hair, which can dry the scalp and weaken strands,” says Rob Smith, Dyson’s senior principal scientist. As a result, haircare brands are looking to skincare for innovation. Like an SPF for your strands, Aveda’s Sun Care Protective Hair Veil ($50; aveda.com.au) is a summery neroli-scented, water-resistant mist that shields the hair from UV damage.
Additionally, consider easing back on the heat styling, or choose tools with adjustable temperature settings. While humidity is high and giving hair added oomph, a texturising product such as Mr Smith Sea Salt Spray ($37; mr-smith.com.au) will turn frizz into lived-in waves. Simply plait into a loose braid for a pretty summer style.
